If you have ever hiked in Utah’s red rock country, you are aware of the amazing sense of earth color and the striking contrast of vegetation. I have always been disappointed by my photos when I get home, because they rarely convey what I felt. This photographic disappointment creates artistic opportunity, in that I can paint the scene as I remember it, with its sense of red vastness cloaked in the cool blues of sagebrush, intermixed with the warmer green junipers and pinyon. Since red and green are complementary colors on the color wheel, it is an ideal environment for the artist to exploit color tensions. This painting was inspired by a view from a secluded spot off the trial in an otherwise busy section of Arches National Park. Although an occasional group of hikers passd below me through this landscape, I felt connected to its vastness.
This painting won an award at the Rockies West National 2013 Exhibit.
